Edith’s portrayal of her Buff Orpington
chickens almost made me want to go out and get one. She
wrote:
“My favorite variety
is the Buff Orpington Heritage Chicken breed. They
originated in England, and became a distinct breed in 1901.
I’m English….
“The reasons are:
“They are large,
stately chickens with very good dispositions. They are
gentle, and friendly. I have not found a variety that states
so well
what good setters,
and Mothers they make. The meat is very good, with white
flesh, and very juicy. They lay an abundance of large brown
eggs.
“I love the Roosters
because of their dancing to attract the
Hens. They are beautiful birds, fun, and friendly. I love the
way they watch over their flock. The Rooster will not tolerate any Hen
fights. He jumps right in between them to break it up. They are
fun to watch.”
Kathleen agreed,
although she was more concise:
“My favorite chicken
variety is the Buff Orpington. The photo demonstrates why.
From age 8 to age 16 and still going, this is my son’s go-to hen
for a snuggle.”
I too love my Buff’s. When I first got chickens three years ago, I caved and got a mix flock, one of which was a BO. That’s been my biggest regret this whole time is that I didn’t just pick up a whole box of BO’s because they are all the things you describe above.
I have always recommended the buff orpington to first-time chicken owners. I’m in dog rescue, and I call them the “golden retriever of chickens”: sweet tempered and lovable!
We hatched out three Splash Orpingtons over Easter ended up with one hen and two roos one of which is a huge bird that we call legless because he is not that good on his feet and wobbles a lot!

We had expected to have some buff Orpingtons in our last hatch but they turned out to be Gold laced Black Orpington x Wyandottes so we have called them Diesels as they have good green feathering

A picture is worth a thousand words. Have to admit… I’m very partial to my Buffs. Not only beautiful birds, they have good temperament and are both layers and meat birds.
