What’s the capacity of the reservoir on this? Also, is any part of it metal? I’d like to use apple cider vinegar/water solution in it and can’t have metal.

Each of our premade waterers is half a gallon, and the only metal part is the hanging handle. You can make smaller or larger versions out of several other materials using our do it yourself kits too.
The chicken waterers and feeders look great! I stumbled on your site just after my wife and I were talking about how keeping a flock of chickens would tie us to the property. A God send.

We have 15 chickens right now,and are ordering about 17 goldenlaced wyandottes, our grandson showed chickens at the 4H Fair last year, he isn’t the only one that is hooked on chickens. I want to start the chicks on the new waterers. I like the idea of them being up off the ground. No water mess on the ground. I am a little worried about how to start them off on the new watering system. I want to start the older chickens on the new system too. Just wondering do ducks do well on this kind of watering system, or should we just stick to the watering pan? Thanks for you help, Cheryl
Cheryl — About 98% of chickens have no problem changing over to our waterers, so chances are you won’t have trouble. Several of our customers have also had good results with ducks, although you will want to have some kind of open water available for the latter to clean their eyes.
Under normal conditions how long would you expect the unit to last before the nipple leaks or needs replacement? Also how does the unit hold up in the frigid north where water freezes? Thanks.
Are any of your Poop-free Waterers BPA FREE? I live in Florida and it gets hot which causes leakage in the plastics. If not do plan on having BPA FREE containers.
Corey — We still have some of our original prototypes in use on our farm, although some also started to have problems around year three or four. Our warranty is good for one year to ensure that you don’t have a faulty waterer to begin with.
Longevity will depend in large part on how you care for your waterer. Dropping them repeatedly, leaving them out in the sun, and letting them freeze with water inside will shorten their lives considerably. (Of course, I’ve done all of that with the waterers I mentioned above, but it’s worth noting in case you want to get the very longest life out of your waterers possible.)
I especially recommend taking the waterer inside for the night in freezing climates, although what’s most likely to break if you don’t do so is the plastic container, in which case you can unscrew the nipple and add it to another reservoir. Another option is to use one of our kits to make a heated waterer to prevent winter freezing.
Anthony — Our waterers are made out of food-safe plastic, but not BPA-free plastic. Your best bet there is probably to order one of our DIY kits and to use it with the type of container you think will stand up in your hot climate the best.
Thank you Anna. I just discovered 5 gallon buckets at lowes. They are BPA free and Food Grade. ($3.99) and at the Home Depot I found pop in lids that are airtight ($5.99) that have an outer ring and in the middle is a screw top. That is also food safe. So if anyone else is interested in BPA free added to your ingenious product thats where to find it. I am purchasing your kit soon as I am done writing this because today is the last day I am cleaning out the water tray. Well last day in my mind until your product arrives! I swear I have starred at my Chicken waterers thinking how I can possibly keep it fresher and cleaner and your product finally appeared! Thank you!!!
Anthony — Thanks for sharing! I didn’t realize the new Lowes buckets were BPA-free — they’re our favorite reservoirs for chicken waterers if you’re going to buy something, so that’s a great additional selling point.
How many hangers/hooks come with the set of three Avian Aqua Misers? And does the DIY kit with three nipples also come with three hooks? Just didn’t see explicit mention of this and want to be sure before I order. Thanks!
AustinJR — The premade Avian Aqua Misers come with hangers already installed, as you can see in the photo at the top of this page. The kits come with wires and instructions on how to bend those into hangers; one wire is include per nipple.
Did your earlier answer mean that avian miser waterers use Lowe’s buckets that are bpa free? Thanks.
Patricia — Our Avian Aqua Miser Originals are made with food-grade plastic (not BPA-free), our EZ Misers are made with run-of-the-mill plastic, and our DIY kits allow you to choose a container that meets your own standards.

Just wanted to let you know I’ve been using you Avian Aqua Miser chicken waterers for about 3 years now, and I love them. It’s so convenient not to have to water my chickens every day. I use 2 of your .05 gal wagerers for my small flock of 14. Another plus about your wagerers that no one has mentioned is it prevents wild birds from drinking and dirty in your chickens water. That’s a big plus for me. I used to hate seeing sparrow feces in my chickens water bowl. You have a great product! I love the already made ones…just fill ’em up and you’re good to go!

HI! A quick question, is the avian aqua miser all set to go or is there any assembly?
laura — Thanks for your interest! All of the waterers on this page require no assembly, but the kits on a different page will require you to build the waterer yourself.

I am getting baby chics for first time and I am using a storage container to hold them the first month-would you just hang this off the container? How long is it as I want to be sure it fits the container.

That’s how we start our chicks too (although they tend to outgrow the storage container after about a week). I just hang the Avian Aqua Miser Original off the side, but depending on the orientation you may need to bend the handle differently to make it work. Luckily, our wire handles are rebendable (although you don’t want to change them too many times or they’ll eventually break).
In terms of height, our waterer is 9.5 from top to tip. You’ll want to allow a couple of inches underneath for the chicks to get in there. The total length including the handle is 12 inches.
